Andreas Wegener (born June 16, 1958 ) was a football player in the GDR upper league . In the top division of the GDR Football Association , he played for 1. FC Union Berlin .

Athletic career

Wegener began his career as a football player in the youth department of the East Berlin company sports association (BSG) EAB Lichtenberg 47 . As a 14-year-old, he was delegated to 1. FC Union Berlin in 1972. From 1974 he played there in the junior team. When the first Union team played in the second-rate GDR league in 1975/76 , the 1.77 m tall Wegener was already playing in one game there. It was the league game Vorwärts Neubrandenburg - 1. FC Union (0: 1) on March 14, 1976. Union rose in the summer of 1976 in the GDR Oberliga, but Wegener played for Union in the GDR youth league until 1979.

Also for the 1979/80 season he was registered for the junior league, but coach Heinz Werner used him in twelve games in the GDR league this season. Initially only a substitute, he was in the starting eleven for the last four games of the season, first as a midfielder, then in defense. At the end of the season Union had to relegate back to the GDR league, and although Wegener had been nominated for the first team, he only played a single point game. For the 1981/82 season he was given up for one year to the GDR league promoted EAB Lichtenberg 47. When 1. FC Union rose again in the league in 1982, Wegener returned to the club. However, under the new coach Harry Nippert , Wegener did not succeed in achieving a regular place in the league team. As in 1979/80, he only played twelve league games, nine times as a substitute. If he was in the starting line-up, Wegener played as a striker. Also for the 1983/84 season, Nippert Wegener had planned for the attack of the league team, but then did not use him in any competitive game. At the end of 1983, Wegener was delegated by the club. Within four seasons he had played 26 competitive games with the first Union team, 24 of them in the major league. He hadn't scored goals. During this time he had completed his studies as a certified sports teacher.

Even later, he no longer appeared in higher-class football.
