Andrei Korotayev

Andrei Witaljewitsch Korotajew ( Russian Андрей Витальевич Коротаев ; born  February 17, 1961 in Moscow ) is a Russian orientalist , anthropologist , historian and economist. He is the director of the Moscow Center for the Anthropology of the East . In 2003 and 2004 he was also at the Institute for Advanced Study .

Life and research

Andrei Korotajew studied at the Institute for the Countries of Asia and Africa at Lomonosov University in Moscow and graduated in 1984 as a historian . In 1990 he obtained the academic degree of Candidate in Science (Doctor); 1993 Ph.D. at the University of Manchester ; 1998 Doctor of Science degree in History.

Since 1989 he has been working at the Institute for Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. From 2002 as a senior researcher; since 2012 as head of research. From 2001 to 2004 Korotayev was a professor at the Department of General Sociology and head of the “Sociology of the East” program at the National Research UniversityHigher School of Economics ” in Moscow

His research focuses on four problem areas: He deals with the long-term evolution of socio-political systems in northeastern Yemen , researches the origins of Islam and the most important trends in the development of social systems in southern Arabia. He has demonstrated the existence of matrilineal groups in pre-Islamic Arabia.

Another research focus is on intercultural studies ( Cross-Cultural Studies ). He has made important contributions to the study of the determinants of matrilocality .

He deals with the mathematical modeling of social, economic and historical dynamics (" Kliodynamik "). His mathematical models describe in detail the long-term political-demographic dynamics of Egypt; he used this to analyze the revolution in Egypt in 2011 . Finally, he observes and analyzes the long-term development of global economic dynamics ( Kondratiev cycle ).

He works in the fields of economics and ethnography , especially in relation to factors of the current demographic crisis in Russia .

In 2012 he received the gold medal of the International Kondratieff Foundation .
