Andrew John Kauffman

Andrew John Kauffman (born November 27, 1920 , † 2002 ) was an American mountaineer.

Life

Andrew J. Kauffman studied at Harvard until 1943 and was temporarily President of the Harvard Mountaineering Club. After graduating, Kauffman worked at the US State Department. As a mountaineer, he took part in numerous expeditions in the Andes, Himalayas and Karakoram. His greatest success was the first ascent of the 8080 meter high Hidden Peak (Gasherbrum I) together with Pete Schoening in 1958 .

Kauffman was temporarily director of the American Alpine Club.

  • Huagoruncho, 5800 m (Andes, Peru), 1941 first ascent attempt, expedition of the Harvard Mountaineering Club
  • Mount Saint Elias , 5489 m (Alaska), 1946 expedition of the Harvard Mountaineering Club (second ascent) together with his wife Betty Kauffman, Dee Molenaar, Cornelius Molenaar, Maynard Miller, William Latady and Benjamin Ferris. To cope with the 5489 meters of altitude from sea level to the summit, eleven camps were set up, eight of which were only used to reach the foot of the mountain.
  • Gasherbrum I , 8080 m (Karakoram, Pakistan), first ascent with Pete Schoening on July 5, 1958 over the IHE spur and the southeast ridge.
