Andrew Gust "Andy" Marefos (born July 16, 1917 in San Francisco , California , USA ; † February 18, 1996 in Marysville , California), nicknamed "Anvil Andy" or "Handy Andy", was an American football player Player . He played as a running back in the National Football League (NFL) with the New York Giants .

career

Andy Marefos already played American football in high school and won the local school championship with his school team in 1936. After graduating from high school, he joined Saint Mary's College of California , where he continued his football career. In 1938 he and his team won the Cotton Bowl Classic against the Texas Tech University team at 20:13. In 1941 Marefos was committed by the New York Giants supervised by Steve Owen in the twelfth round in 107 place of the NFL Draft . The Giants were able to win eight of eleven games in his rookie season and thus moved into the NFL Championship Game against the Chicago Bears . The team from Chicago won the game 37: 9. Marefos was only used once as a ball carrier and lost five yards of space. After the following season, Marefos served in the United States Army Air Forces . He was stationed in California , which enabled him to play for various local and regional professional teams. Since the military statutes forbade him to do so, he was forced to use imaginary names.

After his military service, Andrew Marefos joined the Los Angeles Dons , who played in the newly formed All-America Football Conference (AAFC). After a playing year in Los Angeles , he ended his career and returned to San Francisco, where he ran his own nightclub with his brother Ted.
