Angela Sommer-Bodenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Angela Sommer-Bodenburg (born December 18, 1948 in Reinbek , Schleswig-Holstein ) is a German writer and painter as well as a former elementary school teacher who now lives in the United States. She became known through her books about the little vampire .

Life

Angela Sommer-Bodenburg studied pedagogy, psychology and sociology and then taught for twelve years as a primary school teacher in Hamburg. In addition to her work as a teacher, she had her first two book publications in 1979: a book of poetry published by Suhrkamp Verlag with the title Sarah bei den Wölfen and by Rowohlt Verlag Der kleine Vampir

According to her own statements, Angela Sommer-Bodenburg already enjoyed drawing and painting as a small child and regularly borrowed books from the city library. So she began to write her own books at an early age, which she illustrated herself and sewn together with thread. However, the father, who wrote poems, dramas and novels himself, was the only one in her family who supported her career aspiration to become a writer. The beginning of the Little Vampire , according to the author, was set by the children at her school, which she tried to motivate with the reading she wanted ("funny, exciting and also a little bit scary"). For her career as a writer, Angela Sommer-Bodenburg assessed the little vampire as " mixed blessing ". that is, she found herself pigeonholed with the success of this series, which pushed her other adult publications and work as a painter into the background.

The little vampire became the opening volume of a series - each with the illustrations by Amelie Glienke - which only ended in 2015 with the 21st volume The little vampire and the question of all questions . The story of the Little Vampire was implemented in two television series ( The Little Vampire and The Little Vampire - New Adventure ) and a children's film ( The Little Vampire ).

Angela Sommer-Bodenburg's books have been translated into over 30 languages. She lives with her second husband as a freelance writer and painter in Silver City , New Mexico .
