Ann Hui ( Chinese  許鞍華  /  许鞍华 , Pinyin Xǔ Ānhuá , Jyutping Heoi 2 On 1 waa 4 , Cantonese  Heui On-Wa ; born May 23, 1947 in Anshan , Liaoning ) is a Chinese actress , director and film producer .

Life

Hui was born in Anshan on May 23, 1947. She has a Chinese father and a Japanese mother. She attended St. Paul Convent School , studied English and Comparative Literature at the University of Hong Kong and graduated with a master's degree and a thesis on Alain Robbe-Grillet . She then studied at the London Film School for two years .

Film career

After her return to Hong Kong from England, she initially worked as an assistant to the renowned Chinese director King Hu . Her breakthrough as a filmmaker came with a series of short documentaries for the television broadcaster Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB). In 1977 she made several films for the " Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) - 廉政 公署 " in Hong Kong, a non-governmental anti-corruption agency . These films focused on revelations about government mismanagement and corruption.

After her first feature film The Secret (1979), she stopped shooting for television in the 1980s, but mainly for the cinema. Action films and crime novels based on the Hollywood model were popular in Hong Kong at the time. However, Ann Hui went other ways in her films. One of her central themes is the problems of migrants who have been uprooted from their usual lives and who are struggling to survive in foreign countries under adverse circumstances. One example is the award-winning "Vietnam Trilogy", which deals with the fate of the boat people . Boat-People was one of the first Hong Kong films to be shot in the PRC. The film, which was shown in Cannes in 1983 , shows the cruel living conditions in North Vietnam three years after the end of the war. The film was not allowed to be shown in Taiwan, was withdrawn from circulation in Hong Kong and ultimately also banned in the PRC. A second central theme of Ann Hui are family problems and family conflicts, presented e.g. B. in her film My American Grandson from 1990. The melodrama Tao Jie - A Simple Life , which started in German cinemas on April 24, 2014, can be understood as a counterpart .

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
