Therese Ann Rutherford (born November 2, 1917 in Vancouver , British Columbia , Canada - † June 11, 2012 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American film actress .

Life

Ann Rutherford was born in Vancouver, Canada, to John Rutherford, a former singer at the Metropolitan Opera , and actress Lillian Mansfield. The parents moved to San Francisco shortly after their daughter was born and divorced soon after. Ann began her acting career at an early age, making her stage debut at the age of five. In 1935, at the age of 17, she moved to Hollywood and took on the female lead in her first film, Waterfront Lady . In the following years she played mainly in B-Westerns, among others alongside Gene Autry and John Wayne . In 1937 she was signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , where she starred as the Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol (1938) and as Lydia Bennett in Pride and Prejudice (1940). In some films, Rutherford also took on leading roles, for example alongside Glenn Miller and his orchestra in the music film Orchestra Wives (1942).

Perhaps her best-known role was played by Rutherford in 1939 as Scarlett's youngest sister, Carreen O'Hara, in the classic film Gone With the Wind (1939). In Gone with the Wind, as in other films, Rutherford was mainly subscribed to the role of the good-natured young girl. At the side of Mickey Rooney , she played his girlfriend Polly Benedict in many of the Andy Hardy films between 1937 and 1943 . Rutherford has also appeared in several films as the screen partner of Red Skelton . From the 1950s onwards, Rutherford appeared almost exclusively in various television series and turned her back on the Hollywood business because she mainly wanted to take care of her children. By 1976 she had around 80 film and television appearances. A comeback offer from James Cameron to appear as old Rose Calvert in Titanic (1997), Rutherford turned down.

After their first divorce, Rutherford was married to the film producer William Dozier in their second marriage from 1953 until his death in 1991 . Even in the last years of her life, Rutherford made public appearances at film festivals, especially Gone With the Wind . The actress died of heart problems on the evening of June 11, 2012 in Beverly Hills at the age of 94 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City . Ann Rutherford holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
