Ann Wauters (born October 12, 1980 in Sint-Niklaas , Belgium ) is a professional basketball player. She is the first Belgian born WNBA player. She last played there in 2012 for the Seattle Storm in the Women's National Basketball Association . Now she only plays for European clubs.
Career
Europe
The 195 cm tall center player was active with Osiris Aalst in her home country from 1995 to 1998 and then moved to France to US Valenciennes Olympique, where she was under contract for six years. She continued to play for European clubs during her season break during her WNBA career. Now she only plays for European clubs.
Women's National Basketball Association
Wauters was selected first in the 2000 WNBA Draft by the Cleveland Rockers . Wauters played for the Rockers for three seasons. When the Cleveland Rockers disbanded after the 2003 season , they were selected fourth in Dispersal Draft by the New York Liberty . Wauters played for Liberty from 2004 to 2005. She then left the WNBA for an indefinite period of time to recover from the strains of recent years and to enable the Belgian national basketball team to make the jump to the 2008 Olympic Games . She returned to the WNBA in the 2008 season. On February 6, 2008, she was selected by the Atlanta Dream in the Expansion Draft . On April 9, 2008, the Dream Wauters, Morenike Atunrase and a second-round pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft transferred to the San Antonio Silver Stars for Camille Little , Chioma Nnamaka and a first-round pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft. She was in the after pregnancy 2012 season again active in the WNBA for the Seattle Storm.
National team
She played regularly for the Belgian national team and was able to qualify twice for the European Championship finals. In 2003 the Belgian team finished the tournament in sixth place and in 2007 in seventh place. At the 2007 European Championship in Italy, she was the player with the most total points scored (177) and the most points scored per game (19.7).
