Anna Henriette Julie von Pfalz-Simmern (* July 23, 1648 in Paris , † February 23, 1723 in Paris) was a titular Countess Palatine near the Rhine from the Pfalz-Simmern line and by marriage Princess of Condé .

Life

Anna Henriette was a daughter of Prince Eduard von der Pfalz from his marriage to Anna , daughter of Carlo I. Gonzaga , Duke of Mantua, Montferrat, Nevers and Rethel. Her father went to Paris in 1645 and converted to Catholicism in order to be able to get married. Anna Henriette, like her sisters Luise Marie and Benedicta Henriette , grew up Catholic in Paris. After the death of her grandfather Carlo Gonzaga in 1637, Anna Henriette became the heir of the Principality of Arches, with the capital Charleville-Mézières .

She married on December 11, 1663 in Paris with Henri Jules de Bourbon, prince de Condé , who held the title of Duke of Enghien until the death of his father, then that of Prince of Condé. In France she was also called Anne-Henriette de Bavière . Her maternal aunt, Luisa Maria Gonzaga , Queen of Poland, wanted Anna Henriette's husband to be elected King of Poland after the death of King John II Casimir . Johann Kasimir had adopted Anna Henriette as a child. However, Louis XIV did not pursue this plan , which also excluded the Duke of Enghien from a military career.

Henri Jules was mentally ill throughout his life and increasingly terrorized his family and servants. With advancing age the abnormality grew into constant mental illness ( lycanthropy ). While his father was known as Le Grand Condé (the great Condé) , he was called Condé Le Fol (the crazy Condé) . The contemporary Saint-Simon described Condé's behavior in detail.

Palais Petit Luxembourg

Anna Henriette lived in the Palais Petit Luxembourg in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, where she gave the name to Rue Palatine ; today it is the seat of the Senate President. She died at the age of 74 and survived not only her husband but also eight of her ten children. She was buried in the convent of the Carmelites in the suburb of Saint-Jacques in Paris.

She had inherited the Duchy of Guise from her husband . She left half of it to her grandson, Louis IV. Henri de Bourbon, prince de Condé , who in 1727 also bought the other half from her sister Benedicta Henriette von der Pfalz .
