Dame Anna Wintour , DBE (born November 3, 1949 in London ) is a British journalist . Since 1988 she has been the editor-in-chief of the US edition of Vogue and one of the most influential women in the fashion industry .

Family and childhood

Anna Wintour is the daughter of Charles Vere Wintour , the former editor of the Evening Standard, and Eleanor ("Nonie") Trego Baker, the daughter of a Harvard law professor. The couple were married from 1940 to 1979. Four other siblings came from the marriage: James Charles, Director General of Gravesham Borough Council , Nora Hilary, Director of Public Services International in Geneva and Patrick Walter , political journalist and political editor of the British daily The Guardian . Anna Wintour's eldest brother died as a child. Her stepmother is journalist Audrey Slaughter , founder of Honey and Petticoat magazines .

Career

Anna Wintour attended North London Collegiate School, which she left at the age of 16. She decided not to go to college but trained at Harrods in London. Her career as a fashion journalist began in 1970 when Harper's Bazaar briefly merged with Queen to form Harpers & Queen . There she set up new, innovative locations for recordings. For example, she recreated works by Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet with models in go-go boots. After a brief stint at a magazine called Savvy , she became a junior fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar in New York City in 1975 .

In 1986 she became the editor of American Vogue and House & Garden the following year. Under her leadership, American Vogue again focused exclusively on fashion. The September 2007 issue had a length of 832 pages, making it the monthly magazine with the largest number of pages that had appeared until then. Wintour was also responsible for launching three sister magazines, Teen Vogue, Vogue Living and Men's Vogue . Her commitment, which was largely responsible for the success of the magazine, helped her to the title "Editor of the Year". In the course of the New Year Honors 2017, Wintour was elevated to the personal nobility by the British Queen.

Anna Wintour is often referred to as the most influential woman in the fashion industry, setting trends and promoting new designers. She decides which designers appear in Vogue. The Guardian called her "Unofficial Mayoress of New York City" - so "the unofficial mayoress of New York". She has played a major role in the success of designers like John Galliano ( Christian Dior ) and Michael Kors .

The bestseller The Devil Wears Prada ( The Devil Wears Prada ) by Lauren Weisberger be based on the experience of the author as a personal assistant to Anna Wintour. The book was filmed in 2006 with Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, who is supposed to play Wintour, and Anne Hathaway as Lauren Weisberger.

RJ Cutler's 2009 documentary The September Issue explores the making of the September 2007 issue of Vogue - weighing nearly five pounds, it was the largest single issue of a magazine ever published. In addition to insights into the hectic everyday working life of the fashion world, the film also shows personal, quiet moments in the life of Anna Wintour and her long-time creative director Grace Coddington .

Private life

In 1984 she married child psychologist David Shaffer and had two children with him. The couple divorced in 1999. She is the curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She also founded the “CFDA / Vogue Fund” to support unknown designers.
