Anne Boyd

Anne Elizabeth Boyd (born April 10, 1946 in Sydney ) is an Australian composer and music teacher.

After attending Hornsby Girl's High School, Boyd studied music at the University of Sydney , where Peter Sculthorpe was her main teacher. A Commonwealth Overseas Scholarship enabled her to study at the University of York with Wilfrid Mellers and Bernard Rands .

From 1972 to 1977 she taught at the University of Sussex , then returned to Australia and devoted herself entirely to composition. In 1981 she became the founding dean of the Faculty of Music at Hong Kong University . In 1990 she became Professor of Music at the University of Sydney.

Boyd's compositions are performed internationally and are published by Faber Music in London and the University of York Music Press . The meditation Angklung (1974), which she wrote for the pianist Roger Woodward , the chorale A Vision: Jesus Reassures His Mother , the song cycle Meditations on a Chinese Character for voice and chamber ensemble (1976), the piece Goldfish Through Summer Rain became particularly well known (1979) for flute and piano and the orchestral work Grathawai (1993). For her services as a composer and music teacher, Boyd was honored as a member of the Order of Australia in 1996 . In 2003 the University of York awarded her an honorary doctorate. In 2014 she received the Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Award for her services to Australian music .
