In the attack in Paris on April 20, 2017 , an assassin on the Champs-Élysées attacked several French police officers with a gun and shot one of them. The investigating authorities suspect an Islamist background to the crime.

Sequence of events

The crime occurred at 8:50 p.m. near the Franklin D. Roosevelt metro station on the Champs-Élysées. According to eyewitnesses, a car stopped next to a police bus. The driver got out and immediately opened fire on the police bus. He shot the driver of the bus and injured two police officers and a German passerby. The assassin tried to escape; he was shot and killed by a police patrol. According to eyewitnesses, the area was immediately closed. On the evening of the crime, the police and French President François Hollande spoke of a terrorist attack ; the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) announced that one of its fighters with the battle name Abu Yusuf al-Beljiki ("Abu Yussef the Belgians") had committed the crime.

Perpetrator

According to media reports, the 39-year-old French citizen Karim Cheurfi (born December 31, 1977 in Livry-Gargan ) carried out the assassination attempt. In 2003 he was sentenced to twenty years in prison in Roissy-en-Brie for attempted killing of three people, including two police officers.

The sentence was reduced to five years in prison in 2005 after Cheurfi appealed. Cheurfi was recorded as an Islamist threat in the Fiche S threat file of the Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure (DGSI).
