Entitlement title

Claim titles or pretense titles are titulatures that are retained by the bearers and in some cases consciously accepted in order to document an - actual or even merely supposed - "claim" to a territory or an honorary rank.

Examples of claim titles

In the political-dynastic area:

• King of Jerusalem (until 1918 led by the emperors of Austria as successor to the Roman-German emperors)
• King of Navarre - led by the French kings

In the church sector:

• the Patriarchate of West India , which was formerly led by the court chaplains of the Spanish kings (vacant since 1963)
• the titular bishops of the Roman Catholic Church
