Antoine Chintreuil (born May 15, 1814 in Pont-de-Vaux , † August 8, 1873 in Septeuil ) was a French landscape painter . He grew up in Bresse and moved to Paris in 1838, where he became a pupil of the painter Paul Delaroche in 1842 . In the following year he met Corot , who influenced his style significantly and encouraged him, among other things, to paint landscapes en plein air .

In 1863, alongside Édouard Manet , James McNeill Whistler , Henri Fantin-Latour , the Desbrosses brothers, Armand Gautier , Henri Harpignies , Camille Pissarro , Johan Barthold Jongkind , Alphonse Legros , Constant Dutilleux and Paul Cézanne, he was among the then well-known representatives of the avant-garde at the time , which was rejected by the jury of the Salon de Paris and therefore could not show their works at the official state art exhibition. The salon jury's reputation for not being open to avant-garde trends is based on their rejection.

Art historian Athena SE Leoussi suggests dividing Chintreuil's work into three different periods. From around 1846 to 1850 he painted Paris and its surroundings. He painted Montmartre particularly often . From 1850 to 1857 he lived in Igny and painted repeatedly in Barbizon . From 1857 he lived and worked in La Tournelle-Septeuil in the Seine Valley. During this final period his work reached its climax and was widely recognized.

Due to the breadth and simplicity of his painting style and his ability to capture light and atmosphere, Chintreuil is placed alongside Eugène Boudin , Johan Barthold Jongkind and other painters of the Barbizon school and is counted among the essential forerunners of Impressionism. Chintreuil died in Septeuil in Seine-et-Oise in 1873.
