Anton Ronacher was the child of poor farmers. After an unfinished saddlery apprenticeship and military service, the talented organizer bought and sold inns, entertainment bars and hotels in various cities of the Danube monarchy . He turned the so-called third coffee house in the Prater into a successful entertainment establishment from 1877 with a summer theater. Finally, in 1886, he acquired the ruins of the Vienna City Theater, which burned down in 1884, and had it converted from 1887–1888 into a variety theater with a restaurant in the auditorium (normal theater operations were not permitted by the fire police at the time, as the building was not vacant). The establishment included a large ballroom, a hotel and a winter garden. From 1890, more artists appeared.

Ronacher's lavish shows delighted the audience, but he still got into financial difficulties. His company had to be saved by a British consortium. Shortly before his death, Ronacher tried a new start in Berlin. He is buried in an honorary grave (43E-1-26) at the Vienna Central Cemetery . His brother Jacob Ronacher founded Café Sperl .
