Antoni Szałowski (born April 21, 1907 in Warsaw , † March 21, 1973 in Paris ) was a Polish composer .

Szałowski had violin lessons from his father from 1912 and between 1919 and 1930 studied piano with Paweł Lewiecki , composition with Kazimierz Sikorski and conducting with Grzegorz Fitelberg at the Warsaw Conservatory . From 1931 to 1936 he continued his composition studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He had his first success as a composer with his Uwertura , which was written in Paris and was soon to be found in the repertoire of many orchestras and was awarded a gold medal at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition .

Since 1931 Szałowski was a member of the Association of Young Polish Musicians in Paris ( Stowarzyszenie Młodych Muzyków Polaków w Paryżu , SMMP), in 1933 he became its treasurer, in 1936 vice-president and in 1938 after his return to Poland its president. After the outbreak of World War II, he volunteered for the Polish army in France, but was not mobilized. He lived in the south of France until 1945, after which he returned to Paris.

After the war his works were performed at numerous concerts and international festivals of new music. In Poland, during the process of Stalinization after his symphony (1950), his compositions were not played for several years. His overture was not performed until the Warsaw autumn of 1956, and in 1962 his opera Zaczarowanej oberży (with changes to the libretto made without his knowledge) took place at the Warsaw Opera .

From 1966 Szałowski lived in Franconville near Paris. Since the end of the war, he has mainly written commissioned works for French radio. It was not until 1970 that he received French citizenship with the support of Nadia Boulanger.
