Antonio Bertali
Antonio Bertali (March 1605 in Verona , † April 17, 1669 in Vienna ) was an Italian composer and violinist .
Life
Antonio Bertali studied at the Acolyte School of Verona until his minor orders in 1623 . There he received his musical training from the cathedral music director Stefano Bernardi and from a violinist named Francesco Lauro. As early as 1620 he played frequently in the " Accademia Filarmonica " in Verona, where he got a permanent position in early 1624. From April 1625 he switched to the imperial service as a violinist at the Viennese court music band . In January 1631 he married the musician and valet Maria Toppa (around 1617–1666) in the Hofburgkapelle. In succession to the late Zinkenist Pietro Verdina(around 1600–1643) was appointed vice conductor. In October 1649 Emperor Ferdinand III appointed him . to succeed Giovanni Valentini as court conductor. In this role he had to compose numerous dramatic works such as operas and oratorios. In 1651 he was granted a reward of 3,000 guilders for his services. On March 2, 1654, the Emperor Bertali raised to the knightly nobility. He was buried in the Minorite Church in Vienna in 1669 .
Works (selection)
Bertali composed operas , oratorios and instrumental music . With his operas he made a significant contribution to the consolidation of the Italian opera tradition in Vienna. Around half of his extensive work is considered lost, and numerous autographs and copies from the hand of Bertali's contemporary Pavel Josef Vejvanovský are still preserved in the holdings of the Vienna Court Library and the library of Kremsmünster Abbey .
In 1653 his first and at the same time most sensational opera, L'Inganno d'amore , was performed at the Reichstag in Regensburg in a theater building specially built for this purpose in front of numerous German princes and envoys.
