The Antoniterkloster Issenheim is a former monastery of the Antonites , which was in Issenheim (German Isenheim ) in Alsace in France . The preserved monastery buildings and the courtyard above the former monastery church have been classified as a monument ( Monument historique ) since 1988 , but not the neo-Gothic monastery church that was built in the post-monastery period.

history

The Issenheimer Antoniterprezeptorei was established in the course of the 13th century, the exact date of foundation cannot be proven. Under the Preceptor Guido Guersi, the Isenheim Altarpiece was built around 1515 for the monastery . The monastery had branches in Basel, Strasbourg, Bruchsal, Würzburg and Bamberg. After the Reformation , the monastery lost its main sources of income and went under in 1777. The monastery grounds were briefly occupied by a Maltese commandery, but this was abolished in 1793. Later the Jesuits built a novitiate in the complex and built a new monastery church in the neo-Gothic style .
