Antony Sher

Sir Antony Sher , KBE (born June 14, 1949 in Cape Town , South Africa ) is a British actor, author and painter.

Life

Sher was born in Cape Town, South Africa. His cousin is Ronald Harwood , a stage actor, playwright and screenwriter. After his military service, he left South Africa and moved to London . He worked as an actor mostly in the United Kingdom and has now acquired British citizenship.

From 1969 to 1971 he studied in London at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art . After his training and some first appearances with the theater group Gay Sweatshop , he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1982 .

His professional breakthrough came in 1985 when he played the lead role in Shakespeare's Richard III . For this role he received the highly decorated Laurence Olivier Award . Since then, Sher has played in many major productions such as Tamburlaine , Cyrano de Bergerac , Stanley and Macbeth .

He appeared on television in 1981 in the series The History Man and in 2002 in The Jury . In 2003 he played the lead role in an adaptation of James Graham Ballard's short story The Enormous Space , which was made into a film under the title Home on BBC Four .

In 1997, Antony took on the role of Benjamin Disraeli in Her Majesty Mrs. Brown . That same year he received his second Laurence Olivier Award for his role as Stanley Spencer. In 2005 Antony married director Gregory Doran . The couple were among the first gay couples to enter into a registered partnership in the UK .

Antony Sher received the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
