Aqmaral Chaidarqysy Arystanbekowa ( Kazakh Ақмарал Хайдарқызы Арыстанбекова / Aqmaral Chaidarqysy Arystanbekowa , Russian Акмарал Хайдаровна Арыстанбекова / Akmaral Chaidarowna Arystanbekowa * 12. May 1948 in Alma-Ata , Kazakh SSR ) is a former Kazakh diplomat and politician .

biography

After attending school, she studied chemistry at the State University of Alma-Ata and graduated with honors in 1971. She then completed her doctorate there and obtained a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) in chemistry in 1975 . Between 1975 and 1978 she was a research fellow at the Faculty of Chemistry at Alma-Ata State University.

Aqmaral Arystanbekova was initially politically active in the Kazakh Socialist Soviet Republic , where she worked for the youth organization ( Komsomol ) from 1978 to 1983 . She then became a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic and, initially between 1983 and 1984, chairwoman of the Kazakh Friendship Society. In addition to her position as chairwoman of the Presidium of the Kazakh Society for Friendship and Cultural Relations with Foreign States from 1984 to 1989, she was most recently a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR between 1985 and 1990 .

In November 1989 she became foreign minister of the Kazakh SSR and held this post after the declaration of sovereignty from the Soviet Union in 1990 until Kazakhstan was finally independent on December 16, 1991. She was not only a member of the Soviet delegation to the United Nations and in February 1991 head of the Soviet delegation to the Commission for Social Development, but also Kazakhstan's first female foreign minister.

She then became head of the preparatory delegation of Kazakhstan in December 1991 and after Kazakhstan's accession to the UN on March 2, 1992 first permanent representative in the rank of ambassador to the United Nations and held this post until 1999. During this time she was not only at the same time as Accredited ambassador to Cuba , but also from 1994 to 1995 as the representative of Amara Essy Vice-President of the 49th UN General Assembly . During the 53rd General Assembly from 1998 to 1999, she was not only Vice-Chairperson of the Executive Board of UNICEF , but also Vice-Chairperson of the First Committee of the General Assembly.

In 1999 she became ambassador to France .

In 2002 she wrote the book The United Nations and Kazakhstan about her experience at the UN .
