Aquagenic pruritus is a rare skin disease , with no clinical abnormalities that andauerndem in time up to 40 minutes planar occurring stinging pruritus manifested varying strength directly or in close temporal association with the moistening of affected skin areas by water. Those affected report the occurrence of aquagenic pruritus mainly after showering or bathing. However, body sweat is also mentioned as a trigger. A distinction must be made diagnostically and therapeutically for idiopathic aquagenic pruritus:

  • Aquagenic pruritus of the elderly (APE = Aquagenic pruritus of the elderly)
  • Aquagenic urticaria

Word meaning

The name of the disease is derived from Latin: Aquagen = triggered by water , and pruritus = itching .

root cause

The etiology of aquagenic pruritus is unknown. The symptoms can occur as a result of polycythemia vera .

treatment

Acute / curative :

  • Locally by applying a capsaicin cream to the affected areas

Preventive / preventive :

Self help

Many sufferers use short-lasting hot showers to contain the itching, using hot gel pillows or hot air blowers immediately after showering. Using cotton clothing and bedding can prevent or contain the itching.
