Aquemini is the third music album by the US rap group OutKast and was released in 1998. It reached number 2 on the Billboard chart and was highly acclaimed by critics for its originality.

About the album

Like its predecessors Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and ATLiens , Aquemini is characterized by its enormous musicality for a rap album, which is generated by a large group of studio musicians , with the instrumentation of the previous albums being supplemented by drums , percussion and horns . The songs contain elements from the genres Country (Rosa Parks) , Electro (Synthesizer) , Dub (SpottieOttieDopaliscious) , Jazz (Liberation) and Rock (Chonkyfire) .

The title of the album is derived from the zodiac signs Big Bois ( Aquarius ) and André 3000 's ( Gemini ). As singles, Rosa Parks (55th place on the Billboard Hot 100 ) and Da Art of Storytellin '(Part 1) were decoupled with a verse from Slick Rick , who was not on the album version . Rosa Parks was nominated for a Grammy in 1999 in the category Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group .

layout

The cover of the album is, like the one from ATLiens , drawn and contains symbols typical for OutKast at the time with u. a. a UFO , e.g. Sometimes extraterrestrial women, a Cadillac , the group's logo, a zodiac and the two zodiac signs Aquarius and Gemini. On the back you can see the two characters, as a symbol for the title of the album, united in the middle of a large zodiac. Like all of the first four OutKast albums, the CD contains a picture of a naked woman, painted by André 3000. The name of the picture, which can be bought for $ 65, is "Lady Lava". The booklet contains many pictures and "Thank You's" as well as all the lyrics.

Reviews

Since its release, Aquemini has received critical acclaim like hardly any other hip-hop album. As one of the few albums of the late 1990s it received from the US - Hip-hop magazine The Source the coveted top rating "5 Mics". The German hip-hop magazine Juice rated Aquemini together with six other albums for the 100th edition retrospectively with “6 crowns”, the highest rating. The album also received the best possible rating from the Los Angeles Times , the All Music Guide , Entertainment Weekly and the music magazine Q, among others .

"Even compared to their already excellent and forward-looking catalog, OutKast's sprawling third album, Aquemini, was a stroke of brilliance. […] [Dre's and Big Boi's] flows grace some of the richest and most inventive hip-hop tracks of the decade. […] What's most impressive is the way everything comes together to justify the full CD running time, something few hip-hop epics of this scope ever accomplish. [...] Aquemini fulfills all its ambitions, covering more than enough territory to qualify it as a virtuosic masterpiece, and a landmark hip-hop album of the late '90s. "

- All Music Guide

The Rolling Stone led Aquemini 2003 at number 500 of its list of the 500 best albums of all time . In a 1999 list of two music magazines of the best "Rock & Rap" albums, Aquemini came in 8th.

Eric Clapton expressed himself as a big fan of the album in the wake of the release of Aquemini .

Information about the songs

  • Songs 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16 contain subsequent interludes . Two of them play in a record shop that sells a CD by the fictional rap group “Pimp Trick Gangsta Click”. The name of the group has meanwhile become a catchphrase for all groups that cultivate the clichés of rap.
  • The stanzas of André in Return of the G are addressed to those people who, due to his expressionistic style, consider him homosexual , drug addict or cult .
  • Andrés' son Seven Sirius, then one year old, can be heard in Slump .
  • West Savannah , as Big Boi relates in the previous interlude, was produced back in 1994. This can be confirmed by the fact that the song can be heard at the beginning of the 1995 OutKast video Benz Or Beamer .
  • André cannot be heard on Slump and West Savannah .
  • Liberation is the only song ever that Big Boi (seriously) sings on.
  • At the end of Chonkyfire , the Source Awards ceremony can be heard in New York City in 1995 , at which OutKast, after being one of the first southern groups to receive an award, were booed by the audience.
