The Arado Ar 396 was an advanced training aircraft manufactured by Arado Flugzeugwerke in the 1940s.

history

As early as 1943, Arado began work on a more refined version of the Ar 96 B due to the constantly deteriorating raw material situation . This design, known as Ar 296, for which a composite construction was intended, did not get beyond the drawing board stage. Instead, Arado and the French company SIPA developed a wooden construction as the successor to the Ar 96 B. In order to keep the production as simple as possible, strong curvatures in the surfaces were avoided and the contours were made as straight as possible.

The production planned at SIPA was relocated to the alternative plant in Letov near Prague due to the approaching Allied invasion . From the end of 1944 until the end of the war, a few machines were still produced there and delivered to the Air Force . At SIPA, after the liberation of France, the machine was completed as SIPA S. 10 and flew for the first time on December 29, 1944. This was followed by 27 more copies, which were handed over to the Armeé de l'Air as advanced trainers. Another 50 copies each followed as further developed versions p. 11 and p. 12. The other variants p. 111 and p. 121 achieved quantities of 53 and 50 copies respectively. The engine used in all versions of the Argus As 411 , a further development of the As 410 , which was manufactured by SNECMA as the 12th S-02.

An Ar 396 was used in the Prague uprising (the air force camouflage was retained, the German national emblems were temporarily painted over with Czech cockades) on May 5, 1945 together with the Ar 96 B.
