The Smart Araneta Coliseum , known as The Big Dome, is an enclosed, multi-purpose arena in Cubao, Quezon City , Philippines . It is one of the largest indoor sports facilities in Asia.

history

The Araneta Coliseum in the 1960s

In 1952, J. Amado Araneta acquired 35 hectares of land in Cubao , which is now the Araneta Center , enclosed by Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue, Aurora Boulevard, P. Tuazon and 15th Avenue.

The Araneta Coliseum was built from 1957 to the end of 1959. From 1960 to 1963, with a dome diameter of 108 m, it was the largest dome hall in the world. It occupies almost 40,000 m 2 . The usable area is 23,000 m 2 .

The arena was opened on March 16, 1960 with the boxing match between Gabriel "Flash" Elorde and Harold Gomes for the world championship in super light weight.

The Araneta Coliseum became internationally famous through the fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, which went down in boxing history as the " Thrilla in Manila " .

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) hosted approximately a thousand games in the arena by 2008. In 1978 it was the venue for the FIBA World Championships.

At the end of 1998 the Araneta family and Pilipinas Shell (subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell ) negotiated a name change with a contract term until 2008. In order to keep their name, the family proposed " Shell Coliseum at the Araneta Center ". Instead, the parties agreed on an oversized Shell logo on the floor of the hall.

In July 1999 the Araneta Coliseum was given a general overhaul for 200 million . It was reopened in November. The main extensions were the box seats and the installation of a display cube, which was expanded in 2003 with an LED display.

The most commercially successful events from 2001 to 2008 were the boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Óscar Larios for 96.2 million , a Westlife concert in front of 17,887 spectators with 18.5 million and a concert by Cliff Richard in front of 5,647 spectators 17.2 million income.

In December 2010, management installed a giant LED display, nicknamed the "Big Cube". The screen has a size of 22.22 m 2 .

In the run-up to the 2010/11 PBA season, the Aranetas agreed with the Philippine communications company PLDT to rename it " Smart Araneta Coliseum ". The five-year contract included improvements to the arena with elevators and parking for up to 2000 cars.
