Arctic Circle Race
The Arctic Circle Race is a long-distance race over three days in three stages in cross-country skiing . It is held annually in March or April in Greenland on the edge of the Arctic Circle .
The race
The main race covers a distance of 160 kilometers. The race, established in 1997, is considered to be one of the toughest ever because of the extreme weather conditions. Often the runners have to brave stormy winds at temperatures below −30 ° C. The failure rate is high. Bjørn Dæhlie said in 2004 about the race, which was stopped after the second day after a heavy storm: "I have taken part in hundreds of races and so feel well qualified to admit this one has lived up to its reputation as the hardest. Certainly it is the hardest I have ever been in. " (I have participated in hundreds of races and think I can say that this one confirmed its reputation as the toughest. It is certainly the most difficult one I have participated in.) Also in 2009 a snow storm prevented the full implementation of the Race. The first day of the race was canceled, but the two following stages were extended so that a total of 122 kilometers had to be covered.
The area around Sisimiut on Greenland's west coast is the host area. It is located approximately 70 km north of the Arctic Circle. In addition to the main race over 160 kilometers, the ACR 160, a hundred-kilometer race, the ACR 100, and the Miki race, which is primarily intended for children and young people, are held in parallel. The running routes are the same for women and men.
Dog sleds are mainly used for supervision on the way , snowmobiles are only used to get to the camps. It is run in the classic style according to the rules of the FIS . Throwing away rubbish or other objects during the race is expressly prohibited. The race is accompanied by the Greenland Ski Association as technical director. Each participant receives a certificate of participation, even those who cannot finish the race.
The Arctic Circle Race was canceled for the first time in 2020 due to the coronavirus epidemic .
