The term arena (from Latin [h] arena , " sand ") describes a special venue. The Duden defines arena as a "arena, [sand-strewn] arena in the amphitheater of Roman antiquity" as well as " sports field , competition site with all-round rising spectator seats", as well as a demonstration area for bullfights and circus ring .

Concept history

Arena, meaning “place for competitions and demonstrations, sports field, ring”, originally “sand-strewn battleground in the ancient Roman amphitheater”, was incorporated into German in the first half of the 18th century. The term initially remained a name for the battlefields in ancient Rome, but was also transferred to modern demonstration and battlefields in the middle of the 19th century.

In Austrian German arena is also used to refer to a summer stage . In the course of the commercialization of the sports and leisure sector, the term arena became a buzzword for multifunctional halls and (soccer) stadiums , mostly in connection with the name of the respective sponsor .
