Aretha Franklin: Amazing Grace (English title Amazing Grace ) is an American music and documentary from the year 2018 through a church concert by Aretha Franklin in 1972, consisting of the original film material from Warner Bros. emerged. The film was first shown at the Doc NYC documentary film festival in New York City in November 2018 after the singer's death .

background

In January 1972, Aretha Franklin gave a gospel concert with the Southern California Community Choir and Reverend James Cleveland at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles , which was spread over two evenings. Her live album Amazing Grace was recorded at the concert , which is still the world's best-selling gospel album to this day. Aretha Franklin sang songs like How I Got Over , Precious Memories and an eleven-minute rendition of the hymn Amazing Grace . Gospel music was an important inspiration for the singer throughout her life .

history

The two concert evenings were filmed for Warner Bros. by director Sydney Pollack . After the shooting, however, it turned out that image and sound did not run in parallel and the material was therefore unusable. Sydney Pollack passed the rights to the film to Alan Elliott in 2007 . The problem of deviating tracks could only be resolved through digital techniques. However, Aretha Franklin did not want to have anything to do with the film and prevented performances in 2011 and 2015 by court order. Only after her death did her family agree to a performance. The documentary was shown for the first time on November 12, 2018 at the Doc NYC documentary film festival in New York City . In the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival 2019 , it ran out of competition.

criticism
