Arif Alvi ( Urdu عارف علوی; * August 29, 1949 in Karachi ) is a Pakistani politician who has been a member of the Lower House of the National Assembly since June 2013 and his re-election in 2018 . Alvi has been President of Pakistan since September 9, 2018 .

Life

Arif Alvi is a trained dentist who mainly treated private patients. He was President of the Asia-Pacific Dental Federation and the Pakistani Association of Dentists.

Arif Alvi was initially influenced by the left student movement of the 1969s, which at the time agitated against the military regime of Muhammed Ayub Khan . At the time, he was chairman of the student union at De'Montmorency College of Dentistry . He was shot and wounded during the student protests.

His political career began as an election worker . In 1977 he was a candidate for the Pakistan National Alliance (PNA), a right-wing party, and received a seat on the Karachi Council. In 1996 he was a founding member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf , having previously toured both right and left positions. He is also one of the authors of the PTI's constitution.

In 1996 he became a board member of PTI and one year later President of PTI in Sindh . In the 1997 elections he was one of 100 candidates for the PTI, but lost to the Muslim League-Nawaz . He also ran for the Sindh provincial government in constituency PS-114 (Karachi), but received only 2,000 votes. In 2001 he became Vice President of PTI. In 2002 he tried PS-90 (Karachi West) and got fewer votes than at the first attempt.

From 2006 to 2013 he was General Secretary of the PTI. In the parliamentary elections in Pakistan in 2013 , he finally won his first seat in the National Assembly. With 77,659 votes, he defeated his opponent Khushbakht Shujaat from the Muttahida Qaumi movement . In 2018 he was re-elected and finally elected as the new President by the election committee.
