Arizona Rangers

The Arizona Rangers were a special police unit that was founded in 1901 on the model of the Texas Rangers in what was then the Arizona Territory to counter the increasing lawlessness in the territory. Their seat was in Bisbee .

In the company, which had a strength of 26 men from 1903, a total of 107 men served in the period from 1901 to 1909, consisting of former law enforcement officers, soldiers, ranchers and cowboys. Captain Burton C. Mossman

Burton C. Mossman was the first captain of the Arizona Rangers and served from 1901 to 1902.

He was rancher, rough rider, and the one who started the ranger unit. He was appointed by Governor Murphy to organize and lead the rangers. In 1902 he resigned as captain because of his own business interests and / or because he did not want to serve under a new governor.

Captain Thomas H. Rynning

Thomas H. Rynning (1902-1907) took over the leadership of the Arizona Rangers after Mossman's resignation.

Under his leadership, the rangers became known for handling strike situations in Morenci and Bisbee. Rynning, who had already been a lieutenant with Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, carried out an extensive training program. Under his leadership, the Arizona Rangers company was increased to 26 men.

Captain Harry C. Wheeler

Harry C. Wheeler (1907-1909) was the third captain of the Arizona Rangers.

Wheeler joined the unit as a private in 1903 . He was promoted to sergeant three months later. In 1905 he achieved the rank of lieutenant and then, on March 25, 1907, became the third captain of the Arizona Rangers.
