Armand Hiebner

Armand Louis Hiebner (born April 17, 1898 in St. Gallen ; † December 31, 1990 in Binningen ) was a Swiss music critic and choir director .

Life

Hiebner's grandfather immigrated to Switzerland from Lorraine with the Bourbaki army in 1871 . Hiebner grew up in St. Gallen and moved to Basel in 1914 to study with Hermann Suter (composition) and Georg Haeser (music theory) at the Basel Conservatory . In 1923 he completed his studies with Walter Courvoisier at the Academy of Music in Munich .

He worked as a music critic for various daily newspapers in the Basel region ( Basler Volksblatt , Basler Nachrichten , National-Zeitung ) and worked as a freelancer for Radio Basel . Hiebner conducted numerous amateur choirs in the region, such as the church choir at the Catholic Holy Cross Church in Binningen from 1935 to 1963 . He was involved in the founding of the Northwestern Switzerland Choral Conductors Association in 1935 and was made an honorary member in 1977. As a composer, Hiebner wrote works for organ, piano, choir and orchestra as well as songs and stage music a. a. for the Basel Marionette Theater.

Hiebner died on New Year's Eve 1990 in the Langmatten nursing home in Binningen after a brief illness. The Armand and Emilie Hiebner Foundation supports concert projects at the Binningen Holy Cross Church and performances of his works to this day.
