Armentières ( Dutch armentières , Picard Armintîre , West Flemish Ermentiers ) is a French commune in the Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Lille .
geography
Armentières is located on the Leie in the northwest of the Métropole Européenne de Lille . The city is also on the border with Belgium .
history
In 1668, Armentières fell to France through the first Peace of Aachen .
19th and 20th centuries
At the end of the 19th century, the textile industry developed in Armentières , which mainly contributed to the city's prosperity until the middle of the 20th century. That is why Armentières is still known today as "the city of linen" ("La Cité de la Toile").
During the First World War , the area around Armentières was the scene of fierce fighting between German and Allied troops , which was particularly characterized by large-scale infantry attacks, gas warfare and prolonged artillery fire . In March 1918, for example, around 20,000 German yellow cross grenades were fired at Armentières within 15 hours , where “liquid mustard gas flowed like rainwater in the drains of the streets” (Harris / Paxman).

Attractions
The belfry of the Armentières town hall, rebuilt in 1934 , was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 .

Cultural event
The "Fête des Nieulles" is a traditional festival that takes place every September. Parades, animations or concerts are organized, as well as the choice of the beauty queen "Reine des Nieulles".
Armentières also has a cultural hall, the “Vivat”, where the residents can enjoy plays, dance spectacles and music concerts.

The soccer club "Jeunesse Athlétique Armentiéroise" (JAA for short) was founded in 1911 and plays in the fifth French league (CFA2).
