Arne Furumark

Arne Furumark (born September 26, 1903 ; died October 6, 1982 ) was a Swedish classical archaeologist .

Furumark was a specialist in art and ceramics from the late Aegean Bronze Age . His main work on the chronology of Mycenaean ceramics appeared in two volumes in 1941. He structured the ceramic material from a formal point of view according to vessel types. This method seemed justified to him because he assumed that the human spirit and human culture had great inertia, under the influence of which change only gradually became noticeable. The work is still a standard work on Mycenaean ceramics and the types defined by Furumark from Furumark 1 to 333 are still used internationally in describing Minoan and Mycenaean ceramics.

After the Second World War , he set new standards in his book Det Äldsa Italy with new research approaches to the prehistory of Italy. In 1947 and 1948 he carried out excavations in Sinda , Cyprus , the results of which were published in 2003 by Charles M. Adelman. In 1950 his extensive article The Settlement at Ialysos and Aegean History c. 1550-1400 BC in the Opuscula Archaeologica . In 1952 he became professor of archeology at Uppsala University . As one of the first used Furumark the successful decipherment of Linear B by Michael Ventris for his research. In 1956/1957, in addition to his professorship in Uppsala, he was director of the Svenska Institutet i Athens , the Swedish archaeological school in Athens . 1962–1963 he carried out further excavations in Cyprus. In 1970 he retired.
