The Arnimplatz is an almost square town square with park in Berlin 's Pankow district , the district of Prenzlauer Berg . It was named after Achim von Arnim in 1903 and is a Berlin garden monument .

Location and development

Arnimplatz as Region 11 within the Prenzlauer Berg district

The square was created at the same time as the development of the residential area, which was mainly built in the Wilhelminian style and is characterized by block perimeter development. It is accessed from the south by the main traffic axis of Schivelbeiner Straße , which belongs to the parallel street of the Berlin Ringbahn . Between Schönhauser Allee and Driesener, along the southern edge of the square, there was initially a tram line for access. Its central location meant that it was chosen as the namesake for planning area 26 - Arnimplatz in the district region XI - Prenzlauer Berg - northwest .

Arnimplatz planning room

The planning area - also the social area / Kiez Arnimplatz or Nordic Quarter  - is limited to the west and south by the tracks of the S-Bahn Berlin Berlin. In the north forms the former Berlin city limits, since 1920 the border to the district of Berlin-Pankow the end, whereby the course of Bornholmer Straße represents an interruption. In the east, Schönhauser Allee forms the border as a section of federal highway 96a .

history

According to the guidelines for residential development in Berlin, which the police chief had issued at the end of the 19th century, an area had to be kept free due to fire and safety regulations. On the development plan, it only bore the name of an adjacent plan street ( Street H / 1, Section XI ). Already on September 15, 1903, the square was named after Achim von Arnim , whose family lived in Berlin. At the decision of the Berlin city council , these simple open spaces were redesigned into decorative spaces by well-known garden designers using bushes, flowers and trees and by integrating monuments and fountains . For the open space shown here with sides of around 152 meters × 150 meters, Hermann Mächtig provided plans that were implemented by 1907.

art

The central element on the square is the monument to Achim von Arnim with his wife Bettina von Arnim by the artist Michael Klein .
