Arnold Bürkli (born February 2, 1833 in Zurich ; † May 6, 1894 ibid) was a Swiss civil engineer and politician.

biography

Arnold Bürkli initially worked from 1850 to 1853 as an engineering assistant in road and hydraulic engineering in Zurich. He worked as an engineer for two years during the construction of the Northeast Railway . He continued his education as a student at the Berlin Building Academy and through study trips to Belgium, England and France. In 1858 he returned to Switzerland and worked first as an engineer for the United Swiss Railways and later as a city engineer for Zurich, where he was responsible for the redesign of the city. According to his project and under his direction, the Bahnhofbrücke (1861–1863) and Bahnhofstrasse (from 1864), as well as various city quarters:

  • Stadelhofer- (from 1862),
  • Railway station (from 1864),
  • Industrial (1873),
  • Zähringer (from 1876) and
  • Fraumünsterquartier, formerly Kratzquartier (from 1877).

In 1863 Bürkli drew up building regulations for the new city quarters. After the cholera epidemic, he carried out a drainage system and sewer reform from 1867 to 1873 and created the city's water supply. As an expert in drinking water supply, Bürkli was also active in Lucerne , Basel , Schaffhausen , Glarus , Neuchâtel , Geneva as well as in Vienna, Bucharest and Italian cities. Bürkli became famous as the chief engineer of the “Quaibau Commission” of the municipalities of Enge, Zurich and Riesbach (1882–1887). The continuous promenade with avenues, meadows and parks, which Bürkli was responsible for building, is still located in Zurich today. In the center of the promenade is Bürkliplatz, named in his honor in 1908 .

When the Belvoirpark was to be put up for sale in 1890 , Arnold Bürkli initiated the founding of the Belvoir Park Society to save the park.

From 1869 to 1885 Arnold Bürkli was president of the cantonal and from 1876 to 1893 of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects (SIA) . In his nine years in office as the Zurich Cantonal Councilor and National Councilor for Freedom , as Commission President he drafted numerous new building laws and was considered an expert in hydraulic engineering.

Arnold Bürkli was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich in 1883 for his services to urban redevelopment . His grave is in the Sihlfeld cemetery .

The memorial for Arnold Bürkli was inaugurated on February 2, 1933 to commemorate his 100th birthday.

Honors

The Bürkliplatz in Zurich was named after him.
