Arnold Giovanni Martignoni (born May 19, 1901 in St. Moritz ; † March 9, 1984 in Samedan ) was a Swiss ice hockey goalkeeper .

Life

Martignoni was born the son of Luigi Ferdinando Martignoni (* February 5, 1870; † December 15, 1944) in St. Moritz and grew up there. From 1917 to 1920 he completed a successful apprenticeship as a plumber in the teaching centers of the city of Bern. In 1932 he married Orsina Tgetgel (born April 7, 1905, † May 23, 1974 in Samedan).

Career

Arnold Martignoni has been an active ice hockey player at EHC St. Moritz since he was ten . After a stay in the USA (1924 to 1925) he was goalkeeper for the Swiss national ice hockey team from 1926 to 1928 . With this Martignoni won the gold medal at the European championship in 1926 in Davos . He also took part in the 1928 Winter Olympics and won the bronze medal with the team. Since the Olympic tournament also served as a world and European championship , Switzerland was also third in the World Cup and, by removing the Olympic champion Canada from the European ranking, it was runner-up in Europe. Martignoni ended his sporting career in 1929 due to a training accident in which he was accidentally hit by a puck in the eye.
