Arnold Paucker

Arnold Paucker , OBE (born January 6, 1921 in Berlin ; died October 13, 2016 in London ) was a German-British historian , editor, and science organizer.

The main subject of his academic work was the Jewish self-defense in Wilhelminism and in the Weimar Republic as well as the Jewish resistance against the National Socialist dictatorship after 1933. One of his main concerns was the refutation of the prejudice of an alleged “Jewish passivity”. His special research topics - largely ignored by research into the 1970s - include the "defensive struggle" of the Central Association of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith (CV) from 1890 to 1933.

Live and act

Arnold Paucker was born in 1921 into an assimilated Jewish family in Berlin-Charlottenburg; his father came from Bucharest and was a leather goods manufacturer, his mother came from Chernivtsi . His younger brother Kurt Paucker (1924–1980) became an American microbiologist . He joined the Jewish youth movement , had to leave school in 1935 due to his Jewish origins and emigrated to Palestine with Alija Bet at the end of 1936 , where he completed an agricultural training in the Ben Shemen children's and youth village . From 1941 he did voluntary service with the Royal Engineers of the British Army . He was used as a soldier in the Africa campaign and in the conquest of Italy . It was retired in Italy in 1947. From 1948 to 1950 he stayed in the USA. In 1950 he came to Great Britain, married an Englishwoman and worked as an export clerk for a bicycle manufacturer.

From 1953 to 1959 he studied German at the University of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham (MA). It was in 1975 when Werner Conze at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1960 he was appointed director of the Leo Baeck Institute in London (which is dedicated to researching the history of German Jews), which he headed until the summer of 2001. From 1970 to 1992 he was also responsible editor of the Year Book of the Leo Baeck Institute . Most recently he was international vice president of the Leo Baeck Institute.

In June 1996, he was awarded the University of Potsdam , the honorary doctorate . In 2011 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire .
