Arnold von Salis

Arnold von Salis (born July 19 or July 29, 1881 in Liestal , † April 2, 1958 in Zurich ) was a Swiss classical archaeologist .

Arnold von Salis came from the 17th generation of the noble Salis family from Soglio . Vallis Praegalliae Praeses Dominus Rudolfus de Salice de Solio, first mentioned in 1259, is considered the progenitor . Arnold von Salis' father, Jakob Arnold von Salis , moved to Basel and became the main pastor at Basel Minster . At the same time he was the last antistes , the holder of the highest office of the Basel church. Jacob Burckhardt's father, for example, held the same position . His mother was Maria Hägler (1859–1924), daughter of a doctor in Basel. From his father he inherited a lyrical and dramatic talent in spoken and written language. He was married to Henriette von der Mühll.

In 1900 von Salis began studying literary history , classical philology , classical archeology and art history at the universities of Basel , Berlin and Bonn . He studied with Alexander Baumgartner , Erich Bethe , Hans Dragendorff , Alfred Körte , Friedrich Münzer , Ernst Alfred Stückelberg , Jakob Wackernagel , Hermann Diels , Botho Graef , August Kalkmann , Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz , Erich Pernice , Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff , Hermann Winnefeld , Franz Bücheler and Hermann Usener . Georg Loeschcke had a particular influence on him . From him he learned the careful and precise method of approaching a work of art. He was also shaped by Heinrich Wölfflin , who trained him to recognize the internal laws and developments in art. In 1905 he received his doctorate with the dissertation De Doriensium ludorum in comoedia Attica vestigiis , a work on the influence of Western Greek on Attic comedy. His public doctoral speech on the Greek baroque style already pointed to future work, especially the habilitation. The habilitation took place in 1909 with the work The Altar of Pergamon. A contribution to the explanation of the Hellenistic Baroque style in Asia Minor in Bonn. In between he worked as a museum assistant at the Academic Art Museum in Bonn and the Antikensammlung Berlin .

In 1910 he became the successor Carl Watzingers a professorship in Rostock , 1916 he became a full professor in succession Friedrich Koepp in Munster , in 1929 he succeeded by Ludwig Curtius , he impressed with his temperament, the Archaeological Institute of the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg . In 1940 he moved to Zurich as the successor to Otto Waser . In 1941/1942 he also represented the archaeological chair at Basel University after the local professor Ernst Pfuhl had died. In 1951 he retired and was succeeded by Hansjörg Bloesch .

Arnold von Salis was particularly concerned with the persistence of image motifs.
