Arrondissement de Clèves
The Arrondissement de Clèves (German: Arrondissement Kleve ; also district of Kleve ) was one of four administrative units of the Département de la Roer (Roerdepartement) in the Rhineland . The district was in the years 1798 to 1814 of the French Republic (1798-1804) and the French Empire (1804-1814).
It formed the northern part of the department named after the Rur . In 1815, due to the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna, the area came largely to Prussia and to a lesser extent to the Netherlands . Geographically, this former arrondissement essentially covered today's Kleve district and parts of today 's Wesel district . With around 90,000 inhabitants, it was the smallest arrondissement of the Departement de la Roer.
The Wesel on the right bank of the Rhine was added as a bridgehead to the Arrondissement de Clèves as the 41st canton of the department in 1808.
