Art Kassel (* 18th January 1896 in Chicago , † 3. February 1965 in Van Nuys , California ) was an American jazz - saxophonist and bandleader.

Saxophonist Art Kassel and his Kassels in the Air were an attraction on the Chicago music scene; The formation made their debut in 1924 in Midway Gardens , then Kassel's band had a 15 year engagement at the Bismarck Hotel and often played in the Aragon and Trianon Ballrooms , where their appearances were also broadcast on the radio and with the well-known bands of the Midwest belonged. In the late 1950s, Art Kassel moved to the west coast , where he appeared with his orchestra for two years on a local television program with his band singers ( The Gloria Hart Show ); In the early 1960s he also made guest appearances at the Hollywood Palladium , then at Myron's Ballroom and finally at the Golden West Ballroom in Norwalk , where his band continued their engagement after his death in February 1965.

In the early years of Kassel's band, well-known jazz musicians such as Benny Goodman , Bud Freeman and Muggsy Spanier played with him . During the 1930s Kassel switched from jazz to sweet music ; his later orchestras could not maintain the previous musical level.

In 1922 Kassel composed the title "Sobbin 'Blues" with Vic Berton . His early recordings appeared on Hindsight Records in the early 1980s under the title Art Kassel - The Uncollected .
