The Art Students League of New York in Manhattan is an association of art students that was founded in 1875 by Lemuel Wilmarth and some students from the National Academy of Design and is arguably the most influential and well-known Art Students League . The founders hated the academic work of the art colleges, they wanted to learn and work together freely and informally. The association is mainly an educational institution.

The association initially resided in a small room on Fifth Avenue before moving to a large building on West Fifty-seventh Street in 1892, where it is still based today.

Many painters and artists who became pioneers of modern art and pop art studied and taught there.
