Artemio Franchi Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Artemio Franchi Cup was an intercontinental football competition for national teams between the continental champions of Europe and South America, which was held twice - in 1985 and 1993. Participants were the current European football champions and the current Copa America winners . It was named after the former president of UEFA , Artemio Franchi . The competition was the counterpart at national team level to the Europe-South American Cup (World Cup) at club level. In addition to the Afro-Asian Cup for national teams and the Asia-Oceania Cup for national teams, it is one of the forerunners of the King Fahd Cup and later FIFA Confederations Cup . After the establishment of this competition, which encompasses all continents, there was no need for another draw. In 1989, 1998 and 2013 there were also encounters between the European and South American champions. However, these only had the character of friendly international matches and no trophy was awarded.
