Superior thyroid artery

The superior thyroid artery or superior thyroid artery ("upper thyroid artery") - referred to in animals as the cranial thyroid artery - is an artery in the neck. It arises from the external carotid artery ( arteria carotis externa ) and belongs to the anterior group of branches of this artery. In exceptional cases it can also emerge from the internal carotid artery and then form its only branch in front of the ophthalmic artery .

The superior thyroid artery is the terminal branch that supplies the upper part of the thyroid with arterial blood and forms anastomoses with terminal branches of the inferior thyroid artery from the thyrocervical trunk of the subclavian artery . The superior thyroid artery gives off the following branches in its course:

Arteria laryngea superior ("upper larynx artery"): It supplies the upper part of the larynx up to the glottis with arterial blood.
Ramus infrahyoideus : along the os hyoideum ; also anastomoses with the ramus on the opposite side
Ramus cricothyroideus : to the musculus cricothyroideus
Ramus sternocleidomastoideus : to the musculus sternocleidomastoideus
Rami glandulares anteriores et laterales : to the glandula thyroidea
