Superior thyroid artery

The superior thyroid artery or superior thyroid artery ("upper thyroid artery") - referred to in animals as the cranial thyroid artery - is an artery in the neck. It arises from the external carotid artery ( arteria carotis externa ) and belongs to the anterior group of branches of this artery. In exceptional cases it can also emerge from the internal carotid artery and then form its only branch in front of the ophthalmic artery .

The superior thyroid artery is the terminal branch that supplies the upper part of the thyroid with arterial blood and forms anastomoses with terminal branches of the inferior thyroid artery from the thyrocervical trunk of the subclavian artery .
