Arthur Lutteroth (born June 21, 1846 in Hamburg , † June 11, 1912 in Hamburg) was a Hamburg merchant, member of the Hamburg Parliament and President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce from 1879 to 1882 .

Life

Arthur Lutteroth was born as the son of Christian Alexander Lutteroth (1812-1867) and his wife Sophie Friederike Lutteroth (from another branch of the family) into a respected merchant family who had come to Hamburg from Mühlhausen in 1815 . His grandfather Ascan Wilhelm Lutteroth was a Hamburg senator and state reformer and his uncle Christian Friedrich Lutteroth was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives and the Hamburg Parliament .

Lutteroth attended a school in Hamburg until 1862, after which he spent a year in Geneva . From 1863 to 1866 he did a commercial apprenticeship at a company in Hamburg, then he worked for a year in London and in December 1867 joined his father's company Lutteroth & Co. as an authorized signatory . Just two years later he became a partner in the company.

On September 30, 1874, Lutteroth was elected to the Commerzdeputation , first represented the Chamber in the section on goods declination and from 1875 in the deputation for indirect taxes. From May 2, 1879 to December 31, 1882 he was President of the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Deputation for Trade and Shipping during this time. As a staunch opponent of the Hamburg customs terminal, he participated in various national and international conferences and traveled the European ports, but the pressure had to Prussia finally bow and approved the accession of Hamburg to a statement from the Chamber of Commerce on June 7, 1881 German Customs Union to which was finally completed in 1888. However, he was able to enforce the construction of the Sandtorhafen, the first modern harbor basin and the establishment of the free port together with the citizenship and the Senate. From 1883 to 1912 Lutteroth was a member of the district committee of the Reichsbank main office and supervisory board of the Vereinsbank Hamburg . He was also director of the Klosterland land company in Hamburg and general agent of the Riunione Adratica insurance company in Trieste , Germany, Denmark and Scandinavia.

Member of the Hamburg Parliament

From 1876 to 1901 he was a member of the Hamburg parliament. Since 1889 a member of the Citizens' Committee, he was elected to the Finance Deputation in 1893 and represented it from 1894 to 1896 in the Deputation for Trade and Shipping and in the Pension Fund Deputation, in 1896 in the Fire Fund Deputation and in the Fire Extinguishing Department and from 1897 to 1898 in the Bank Deputation.

Arthur Lutteroth married Charlotte Marie Lutteroth (1850–1940), his cousin, with whom he had four children: three daughters, Frieda (1870–1913), Elsa (1872–1929) and Freia (1880–1885), as well as a son, the district court director and Hamburg genealogist Ascan Wilhelm Lutteroth (1874–1960).
