Arthur Mittag (born July 16, 1906 in Gottleuba ; † August 20, 1946 in Radebeul ) was a German psychiatrist who was involved in Nazi murders as part of child euthanasia .

Life

After finishing his school career, the doctor's son Mittag completed a medical degree at the universities of Würzburg , Rostock , Erlangen , Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig . Initially, the psychiatrist was at the Arnsdorf State Institute at noon and specialized in racial hygiene .

After the National Socialists seized power in May 1933, Mittag had joined the NSDAP and had been a member of the SA since 1934 , where he held the rank of medical officer. From November 1934, Mittag was employed at the Leipzig-Dosen Institute , where from July 1935 he headed the hereditary biology department. From 1936 he was an employee at the Racial Political Office of the NSDAP . Furthermore, he was an assessor at the Hereditary Health Court and worked at the local marriage counseling center, which was based on racial hygiene. Mittag is said to have been one of the few experts who rejected compulsory sterilization rather than suggesting it. At the University of Leipzig he was awarded a doctorate in 1938 with the dissertation "On some of the factors influencing the chances of success in the treatment of cardiazole cramps in schizophrenia". med. PhD. He had been married to a nurse since March 1938, and the couple had a son in 1941.

From October 1940 , Mittag was in charge of the so-called “ children's department ” at the Leipzig-Dosen institution , which was transferred to the Großschweidnitz institution due to the war in December 1943 , where Mittag again took over the department management. On his instructions, around 800 children were murdered at both locations with the help of the lethal anesthetic Luminal .

After the end of the war, his employment at the Großschweidnitz institution was terminated in October 1945. He then practiced as a general practitioner in Bad Gottleuba on the instructions of the Soviet military administration . After he was arrested for participating in the children's euthanasia, he committed in the Radebeul custody suicide by injection of 30 resolved Luminaltabletten.
