Arthur von Wallpach (zu Schwanenfeld) (born March 6, 1866 in Vintl , Tyrol; † June 30, 1946 in Klausen , South Tyrol) was a poet and writer .

Life

Arthur von Wallpach was born on March 6, 1866 in Untervintl in the Puster Valley as a scion of an old noble family from Alsace, which had lived in Tyrol since the 14th century. After high school he attended the commercial academy in Innsbruck. He did not take up studies, but was from 1892 to 1893 honorary boy of the fraternity Germania Innsbruck . He took over a seed business from his father, which he ran until 1938.

He was one of the leading figures of the “Jung-Tirol” association, an association of Tyrolean authors, artists and musicians such as Rudolf Greinz (1866–1942), Heinrich von Schullern (1865–1955), Anton Renk (1871–1906) and Franz Kranewitter (1860-1938). The members of the group founded in 1899, whose mentor was the poet Adolf Pichler and which had its roots in the Tyrolean Kulturkampf , were hostile to the Roman Catholic Church and called for a radical renewal of Tyrol in the spirit of liberalism . Wallpach's Anger Castle near Klausen was a regular meeting point for “Jung-Tirol”.

The most important organs of the group were the magazines "Der Scherer" (from 1899) and "Der Föhn" (1909-1911), in which Wallpach regularly published poems.

Wallpach's first own volume of poetry "Im Sommersturm" appeared as early as 1893, followed by numerous other volumes. With the volume “Sturmglock” published in 1902, he made a name for himself as the author of radical political and social poetry. Most of Wallpach's poems, however, are dedicated to the beauty of the Tyrolean landscape.
