Artine Artinian

Artine Artinian (born December 8, 1907 in Pazardzhik , Bulgaria , † November 19, 2005 in Lantana , Florida ) was an American romance scholar and philanthropist .

Life

Artinian immigrated to the United States via Ellis Island as a 13-year-old teenager and settled in Attleboro , Massachusetts . He learned English and was the class representative in his high school class for three years. He studied French literature until 1931 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and later at Harvard University in Boston . He received his doctorate from Columbia University in New York . Artinian worked part-time at the famous Sing Sing Prison, playing the flute for the inmates.

For 32 years he was an Artinian Professor at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson , New York. He was dean of the humanities faculty. Artine Artinian became the leading expert on the French author and writer Guy de Maupassant .

After his retirement he devoted himself to various French biographies. He collected many manuscripts and documents from French authors, including unpublished works by Gustave Flaubert and Marcel Proust , which he sold to the University of Texas.

Artinian was appointed officer of the French Legion of Honor . He received honorary doctorates from Appalachian State University (APPstate) and Bowdoin College (1966). He ran a foundation that supported poor students.

Artine Artinian was married to Margaret Woodbridge (1911-2005) since 1936, who died on February 20, 2005. Margaret Woodbridge came from a respected American east coast family.
