Arzwaschen ( Armenian Արծվաշեն , English transcription Artsvashen ; Azerbaijani Başkənd ) is a place in Armenia in the Gegharkunik province . It is located as an exclave in the middle of Azerbaijani national territory. The territory of the municipality of Azerbaijan has been occupied since the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and lies in its Gədəbəy rayon (in the north border with Tovuz rayon ).
history
The village was founded in 1845. Until around 1980 it had the Azerbaijani name Başkənd. In August 1992 the exclave was occupied by the Azerbaijani army. According to Azerbaijani sources, enemy tanks were destroyed and 300 Armenian brigands killed when taking the place, while Armenia only spoke of 29 missing. The Armenian population was expelled, ten families fled to Dschiwichlu (Armenian Ջիվիխլու , English transcription Jivikhlu ; Azerbaijani Cıvıxlı ), where Azerbaijani families had previously been displaced. This place is located about 30 km west in the extreme north of the Gegharkunik province, received the Armenian name Tschapkut ( Ճապկուտ ) and became part of the rural community Ajgut , but has now been abandoned again (status 2011).
