Azerbaijani pop music

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Azerbaijani pop music ( Azerbaijani Azərbaycan pop musiqisi ) had its humble beginnings in the late 1950s, with Azerbaijani covers of a wide range of imported popular styles, including rock and roll , tango, and jazz . As other styles emerged, they were also adopted, such as hip-hop , rock, and reggae .

history

1960s

The early 1960s was likely the era when Azerbaijani pop music was most dependent on the group format, with pop acts such as rock bands playing guitars and drums with the occasional addition of keyboards or orchestration. Classical pop-folk music enjoyed great popularity during this period, with artists such as Anatollu Ganiyev, Muslim Magomayev and Shahlar Guliyev.

1970s

Azerbaijani pop music experienced a golden age of productivity in the late 1970s, marked by the rise of a new generation of musicians. Classic pop artists such as Rashid Behbudov , Mirza Babayev, Flora Karimova, Shovkat Alakbarova, Ogtay Aghayev, and Gulagha Mammadov saw their greatest success at the beginning of the decade and were able to maintain their popularity throughout the entire history of music.

1980s

Akif Islamzade was often considered one of the most successful and influential Azerbaijani pop artists of the early 1980s.

Baku chanson , a subgenre of the Russian chanson, has enjoyed increasing popularity since the mid-1980s. Artists like Eyyub Yaqubov brought the Baku chanson to popularity in 1992. However, many artists were dissatisfied with their success and suspicious of the chanson label.

1990s

In the early 1990s, the country music charts were dominated by pop singers with only tangential influences from regional music, such as Niyameddin Musayev and Baloghlan Ashrafov, a trend that has continued since then.

While boy bands and girl groups like Karvan and W Trio dominated the singles charts in the 1990s, artists like Aygun Kazimova , Faig Aghayev, Samir Bagirov , Zulfiyya Khanbabayeva and Brilliant Dadasheva enjoyed their greatest mainstream success to date, and the rise of world music helped revive the popularity of folk music .

During the Nagorno-Karabakh War, in stark contrast to the scene's cheerful dance music, was the emerging military bard, which emerged as part of the independent or alternative folk scenes of the 1990s, led by artists such as Shamistan Alizamanli and Mubariz Taghiyev.

2000s

The breakthrough of the Azerbaijani pop singer Röya in the early 2000s led to her great international success in many Turkish-speaking countries, especially in Iranian Azerbaijan and Turkey, as well as in the Azerbaijani music scene.

At the beginning of the new millennium, when talent contestants were one of the most important forces in pop music, the country made its first appearance in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 Eurovision Song Contest . The country's accession reached third place in 2009 and fifth the following year. Ell and Nikki won first place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with the song "Running Scared", which entitles Azerbaijan to host the 2012 competition in Baku. Ell and Nikki won the first place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with the song "Running Scared", entitling Azerbaijan to host the contest in 2012 , in Baku.

On the contrary, many music critics have argued that the wave of contests and reality shows Yeni Ulduz (Pop Idol) on Azerbaijani television has only enriched the flat image of the pop industry and is cited as a reason for underground and reactionary music to become increasingly popular.

2010s

Shaped by the globalization of world music, electropop, dance-pop , synthpop and electro -pop , along with other forms of dance, electronica and pop music that began in the 1980s, have become the dominant form of music in Azerbaijan in the early 2010s.

Despite the commercial dominance of hip-hop and pop during this period, the rapper Miri Yusif found success with his reggae and soul fusion album "Karma", which was number 1 in the Azerbaijani album overview in 2010. In 2018, the most watched Azerbaijani song also belongs to Miri Yusif "Ad günü" (ft. Dilara Kazimova). The Azerbaijani pop music industry continues to grow with YouTube mashups.
