The Azerbaijani film history is part of the international film culture and cinematography of Azerbaijan .

1898–1919: pioneering days

Instead of being a straggler to the fascinating world of cinematography, Azerbaijan was actually among the first countries involved. At the end of the 19th century, Baku was producing more than 50 percent of the world's oil production on the Caspian Sea . The oil industry attracted foreigners who wanted to invest and work. The service industry continued in the footsteps of the oil industry.

Film "Oil surge in Balakhany" by Mishon, 1898

The Frenchman Alexander Mishon was one of the entrepreneurs who came and settled in Baku. He was a photographer and cameraman and lived in Baku for more than ... years, where he ran a photo studio on Mikhailovski Street, now Aziz Aliyev Street.

Mishon became active in a scientific photo group in Baku and became its secretary. From 1879 to 1905 he documented landscapes, episodes of oil production and the refining process, as well as oil eruptions and terrifying fires that broke out in the oil fields. Copies of his photos still exist today.

Alexander Mishon, the first filmmaker in Azerbaijan

In 1898, Mishon began making films showing daily life in Baku. It was his intention to show them in Paris. The "Kaspi" newspaper announced his film on August 1, 1898. It said:

«On Sunday, August 2nd, 1898, A. Mishon will show some films which he has made with a Lumière film camera and which the engineer Jules Carpentier has improved. These films from the Caucasus and Central Asia are planned for the upcoming International Paris Exhibition and will only be presented once in Baku at the Vasilyev-Vyatski Circus Theater. "

The following films will be shown: «Fire arising from an oil gusher at the Bibi-Heybat oil field» , the «Departure ceremony of His Excellency Amir from Bukhara in the Grand Steamer of Duke Alexei» , a «Folk dance of the Caucasus» , and the scenes from the Comedy, «It turns out, well, You Were Caught» , which was recently performed in one of Baku's parks. For more information, see the posters. The event starts at 9:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m.).

Of course, the event was a huge success, and Mishon repeated it on August 5th, replacing the two final works with those showing life in Balakhani outside Baku.

Film "Oil surge fire in Bibi-Heybat" by Mischon, 1898

Miscchon's films obviously made an impact at the Paris exhibition. They must have attracted more foreigners to the oil-flourishing city.

Mishon's films still exist. "The Folk Dance of the Caucasus" was later used in a documentary, and scenes from the "Oil surge fire in Bibi-Heybat" were shown in France in 1995 in a film commemorating the 100th anniversary of world cinema. On November 27, 1899, an article entitled: «Implementation of New Inventions» was published in the «Kaspi» newspaper written by Hasan Zardabi, writer, scientist and social activist. He made observations, “Now we have in our hands a toy machine - called a“ Kinemato-graph ”. This wonderful machine was recently invented and it looks like a toy right now. You can find this machine called "strobe" in many optician stores " .

In 1915 the Pirone brothers in Belgium set up a film production laboratory in Baku. They invited film director Svetlov from St. Petersburg to work for them and to create «The Woman» , «An Hour Before His Death» and «An Ancient Story in a New Way» . It was Svetlov who also directed the film titled «In the realm of oil and millions» , which later became so widely known. Famous Azerbaijani actor Husein Arablinski played Lutfali, the main role in this film.

In 1917 a documentary entitled «National Freedom Vacation in Baku» was made. The film includes footage taken of Baku's main square, its streets, avenues, parks and the sea coast.

In 1919, during the short-lived independence of the first Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan , a documentary called "The First Anniversary of Musavat's Power in Azerbaijan" was made. Filmed on Azerbaijan's Independence Day on May 28th, this chronicle premiered in June in several cinemas such as «Schnellzug», «Record», and «Forum».

For the first time in Azerbaijan, AFKI (Azerbaijan Photo and Cinema Office) was founded in 1923. When AFKI was founded, movie theaters acted “Airplane” “Milyon” “Madanchi” “Ladya”.

The film "The Legend of the Tower of the Virgin" was released in 1924 as a success of AFKI's activities.

Since 1925, the AFKI have prepared new national actors and directors. The first person to take this step was S. Makhmudbeyov.

Famous film directors such as V. Pudovkin, IA Savchenko, NM Shankelaya, ME Chiaureli and QM Lemdek, VR Lemke, AVGalperin, İ.F.Frolov, AMFeldman, LK Kosmatov, and other AFKI cameras were invited.

AFKI used to be called "Azdovletkino", "Azerkino", "Azfilm". Since 1961 the AFKI was known as the "Azerbaijanfilm" studio after Jafar Jabbarli.

The main themes of the 1920s were the fight against religious prejudice, independence from women, ignorance and science. During this time, "Bismillah" (1925, AM Sharifzadeh, A. Uzeyir Hajıbeyov's musical comedy “Arshin mal alan” was shown again in 1945.

Azerbaijani cinema develops after 1950. It is during this period that the national scenario, director, operator and artist are formed. For example I. Gasimov, A. Mammadkhanli, I. Taghizadeh. L. About 7 feature films, 20 documentaries and scientific mass films were produced annually in the film studio "Azerbaijan Film".

1990 years: The time of freedom

During these years the filming in Azerbaijan was the least compared to other years. For example, we can show "Flattertier" (directed by A. Salayev), "The Other Time" (directed by H.Mehdijew) and Vagif Mustafayev's films.

During this time Andrei Karpov filmed "The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev". Karpov's main purpose was to make The films about the presidents of the MDB countries. First he made a film about the Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev.
