Wall painting astronaut cosmonaut

Astronaut Cosmonaut is a graffiti by the French street artist Victor Ash in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg . It was painted in 2007 , is one of the most famous wall paintings in Berlin and is a sight and tourist attraction in Kreuzberg.

The mural is on the fire wall of the house at Oranienstraße 195. It can be seen from Mariannenstraße at the corner of Skalitzer Straße .

motive

The motif depicts an astronaut in a space suit during an outboard mission ("space walk") of a space station .

Ash used the spaceman as a symbol of the Cold War and the space race that was fought between the Soviet Union and the United States. He made a connection between the artwork and the former running in the nearby Berlin wall here, where the city of the two powers after the Second World War split was. The name of the work of art Astronaut Cosmonaut also refers to this . The name of the work addresses the two different names used by space travelers: in the west "astronaut", in the east "cosmonaut".

“When I did the astronaut painting in Berlin, I used the idea of the Cold War ; I wanted to do something that related to the location where I was painting. And I thought of this huge astronaut because, for me, one of the most important things about the Berlin was that it was an icon for the Cold War. So I made the astronaut in relation to the space race between America and the USSR , to the idea of fighting for something that isn't with soldiers, that isn't here on Earth — it's in another dimension. That's the kind of idea that inspires me: it's more global, more human. "

“When I did the astronaut in Berlin, I thought of the Cold War ; I wanted to do something related to the location of my plant. And I thought of this giant astronaut because for me one of the most important aspects of the city of Berlin is that it is a symbol of the Cold War. So I created the astronaut in memory of the space race between America and the USSR , the idea of fighting for something that can do without soldiers, that doesn't take place on Earth - it's in another dimension. That's the kind of thought that inspires me: more comprehensive, more human. "

implementation

The painting covers an area of 22 × 14 meters. It is painted exclusively with black paint and in the typical appearance of a stencil , with the paint partially running down the wall. In fact, however, it was made without a template. On the opposite side of the street is a car dealership with flagpoles set up, which are illuminated by a headlight in the dark. This projects the shadow of a flag waving in the wind next to the graffito on the house facade. The shadow becomes part of the work of art and shows the astronauts sticking the flag in the ground.

The mural was created in 2007 on the occasion of the third “Backjumps” festival. The wall was provided by GSW Immobilien , which also supported the art project financially.

Others

The mural inspired singer Mark Owen to write his video of the song Stars , in which Owen walks through Berlin as an astronaut.
